Edge of Ready

Rating: 3/5

Dani Garcia’s mother always told her that she needed to get her education. Graduating high school would be an advantage that her mother never had. That goal seems to be getting farther and farther away, as her Mother needs her at home to babysit her little brother, Benny, while she is at work. And then there is her boyfriend, who refuses to take no for an answer. This book is heavy with plot devices and themes: abusive relationships, sexual assault, and poverty. Dani’s struggle to heal from her abuse, as well as the legal process of bringing her rapist to justice is realistic and gut-wrenching. The plot itself ties together quickly and easily, which seems to be a theme in hi-lo fiction. However, this causes inherent problems: Dani’s abuser does not go to prison because of her assault, but because of other crimes. Her Mother finds a babysitter in an unexpected place.
