Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo (Mia)is an average thirteen-year-old: she struggles in math, her Mom is embarrassing, and her crush has no idea she exists. When her Father’s chemotherapy makes it impossible to have children, Mia finds out that she is the crown princess of Genovia, a small country between France and Germany. Now, on top of being a middle-schooler, she has to learn how to be a princess! The Princess Diaries is an epistolary novel, written in a series of journal entries but also smattered with class notes (as Mia is not an organized student). It is a slice-of-life realistic fiction, with Mia struggling with relationships, school, and family. Anne Hathaway not only narrates the audiobook, but plays the role of Mia in the film adaptation, and her narration adds further characterization to the novel. Mia often describes events with pop culture references, which ages the novel: current teens will not understand popular references from fifteen years ago.
